Black History Month 2020 Event Lineup

The St. Philip’s College 2020 Black History Month schedule features events for students, faculty, staff, alumni and the community.
This year, SPC’s Black History Month theme is "African Americans and the Vote.” The theme observes the 150th anniversary of the Fifteenth Amendment (1870) which gave black men the right to vote. The diverse schedule of campus programs and events strive to motivate, inspire and enlighten the SPC community in honor of National Black History Month.
Art Exhibit: The art exhibit features San Antonio native and St. Philip’s College alumnus (1970), Anthony Charles Edwards. His work is part of the Harriet and Harmon Kelley Collection of African American Art. In 1995, one of Edwards’ artwork, Our Land, Our Home was included in an exhibition at the Smithsonian.
San Antonio Youth Wind Ensemble 10th Anniversary Concert: The San Antonio Youth Wind Ensemble will commemorate the 10th anniversary of its founding. The concert features two compositions, “Pictures at the Exhibition” and “Our New Day Begun.”
Piece of Me - Readings of Toni Morrison: In 1993, Morrison became the first African American to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. Her novels, which center black characteristics and communities, are the most celebrated works of contemporary literature.
Voter Registration/Census Information: Collegiate 100 will be providing assistance with voter registration and information on the 2020 Census. Collegiate 100 is a chartered support organization to the 100 Black Men of San Antonio in their efforts to nurture and enhance the growth and development of young men and women of color.
Soul Food Taste: The signature closing event for the Black History Month Celebration at the college. Students from the Tourism, Hospitality and Culinary Arts program create the event that San Antonio’s soul foodies belove most---a traditional soul food taste that includes everyone’s favorite comfort foods. The event is the only paid event on the schedule, and tickets for this event can only be purchased on the St. Philip’s College website. *Link available soon
All events are open to the public. Free parking is available on campus during events.
